The beautiful island of Paxos is one of the quietest and most authentic in this group of islands and was said to have been created by Poseidon as a romantic retreat for his mistress. It's no surprise then it attracts those hoping to get off the beaten track and spend some quality time together – and this home near the main town of Gaios is the perfect spot to do just that. One of a pair of villas on this elevated plot, it looks out across the lush green island to the blue Ionian Sea. Surrounded by ancient olive trees, scented lemon trees and bougainvillaeas, it's Greece at its wild, natural best.
The home is built for comfort and ease, with more than a hint of romance about the place. There's a cool, comfortable open layout to the living space, with modern sofas to lounge on, a central fireplace for winter stays and a place to sit and eat indoors. But we think you'll be rustling up meals, either in the kitchen or on the barbecue, to be eaten alfresco on the wonderful dining terrace to the side. From this shady spot, you can take in views of the pool and the sea while you feast on fresh local bread and fruit.
By day, swim in the pool to your heart's content or walk downhill to the nearby beach, walk along the rocky coast or explore further afield by car – there are some stunning beaches to found on this small island. And in the evening, retire to your pretty bedrooms – we particularly love the upstairs master with it vaulted ceilings and balcony.
