When you’re ready to head out, begin with a trip to São Bento Station, famous for its blue-and-white tiles depicting scenes of Portuguese history – it’s only 300 metres away. Pick up a new coffee table book in the emblematic Livraria Lello then enjoy views of the Dom Luís Bridge from a cafe on the bustling Cais da Ribeira. If all that exploring has worked up an appetite, treat yourself to a francesinha (Portugal’s answer to the croque-monsieur) in a nearby eatery.
*Parking in Porto can be tricky, so we recommend sticking to the easily accessible public transport where possible – though we think the best way to see the city is on foot
