In 1836, Mr. Pedro António Rocha by chance discovered a different pear tree on his property, Fazenda Rocha, which was located in Ribeira de Sintra, in the western region, near Lisbon.
Proud of having unique fruits and unusual quality, every year in September friends are invited to enjoy the pears. It was from this tree that the variety spread and gained fame. In honor of its owner, this rare fruit was renamed Pera Rocha.
