Saquarema is located in the Costa do Sol region about 73 km from the capital Rio de Janeiro. The city has approximately 90.000 inhabitants and has beautiful beaches (such as Barra Nova, Boqueirão, Itaúna, Jaconé, Vilatur) and the city beach in Vila (Saquarema).
The city lives principally from tourism and is also called the state capital of surfing. National and international surfing competitions take place here on a regular basis. Parts of the beach belong to the Parque Estadual da Costa do Sol state park.
In 2003 a large volleyball center was opened. The national team of Brazil trains in this center.
